The goal for Open Doors! goes beyond small businesses checking in, then promptly checking out once the FIFA World Cup ends, said Tracey Lewis, announcing a $100,000 investment from Airbnb to help expand long-term opportunities for small businesses and entrepreneurs.
“This is a defining moment for Kansas City, and it’s critical that our local businesses are positioned to benefit,” said Lewis, President and CEO, Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City. “Through Open Doors! and our partnership with Airbnb, we’re ensuring that global attention translates into real, lasting economic impact for the entrepreneurs driving our city forward.”
Open Doors! — part of the City of Entrepreneurs initiative and led by EDCKC in partnership with the City of Kansas City — activates vacant storefronts by placing local entrepreneurs into high-visibility spaces throughout downtown. Located along the KC Streetcar corridor, these businesses are positioned to meet visitors where they are, Lewis said, transforming increased foot traffic into real economic opportunity.

Airbnb’s investment comes as part of the company’s $5 million Host City Impact Program, designed to create lasting community benefits in World Cup host cities across North America.
When the games arrive this summer, Kansas City is expected to welcome about 11,000 Airbnb guests, generating an estimated $105 million in economic activity, the company said, noting the investment is designed to ensure that increased visitation directly benefits local entrepreneurs, small businesses, and neighborhoods across the urban core.
“Kansas City’s entrepreneurs are some of its best ambassadors, and Open Doors! is giving them a platform at exactly the right moment,” Vincent Frillici, government affairs lead for Airbnb. “This investment is about making sure that when the world arrives, the economic opportunity reaches the entrepreneurs and small business owners who are the heart of this community.”

In addition to the $100,000, Airbnb serves as the exclusive lead sponsor of the Airbnb Small Business Guide, a digital resource developed in partnership with Open Doors! that will connect World Cup visitors to local businesses, restaurants, and storefronts across Kansas City’s urban core.
“This partnership with Airbnb allows us to meet the moment — connecting increased visitor demand with the small businesses that make Kansas City unique,” said Nia Webster, assistant director for Kansas City, Missouri’s Neighborhood Services Department.

During the tournament, Airbnb hosts and guests in and around Kansas City are expected to generate about $105 million in GDP, support more than 400 full-time equivalent jobs through 2026, and provide roughly $3,500 in supplemental income to each local host, according to the company.
Such outcomes reflect how visitor spending can remain rooted in neighborhoods, supporting local businesses and community growth, Airbnb officials said.
