At Startland, we believe great journalism starts with community, impact and authenticity. We’re looking for a curious, resourceful reporter to tell the human stories behind Kansas City’s innovation, entrepreneurship, creativity and economic growth. This contract role offers the opportunity to uncover overlooked perspectives, build meaningful community relationships and produce impactful journalism. The ideal candidate is an independent, enterprising storyteller who thrives on reporting, networking, social media engagement and multimedia storytelling, with a passion for business, entrepreneurship and the people shaping Kansas City.

Position details: This hybrid Kansas City role pays $30 per hour for 20 hours per week, with in-person newsroom meetings in the Power & Light District as needed.

Responsibilities and qualifications: The reporter will identify and pitch timely stories, produce accurate news and feature content on deadline, develop trusted relationships with sources, collaborate on story angles, headlines, visuals and SEO, engage audiences on social media, and capture and edit photos and video. The role also includes covering community events, press conferences and other newsworthy happenings, occasionally during evenings and weekends, while contributing ideas for longer-term projects.

Candidates should have at least two years of professional journalism, media or reporting experience; excellent reporting, interviewing, writing and editing skills; expert knowledge of AP style; strong organizational and networking abilities; social media savvy; multimedia reporting skills; and a commitment to covering Kansas City with curiosity, empathy, accuracy and authenticity.
