A new partnership between the Kansas City Pioneers and Ottawa University is aiming to strengthen the Midwest’s esports ecosystem — and create a clearer path from college competition to the professional stage.
The Kansas City-based professional esports organization and Ottawa Braves Esports, the university’s collegiate program, recently announced the collaboration as a joint effort focused on content creation, cross-promotion and building a pipeline for student talent to enter the pro ranks.

“This partnership represents a significant step forward for esports in the Midwest,” said Sam Kulikov, co-founder and chief marketing officer of the Kansas City Pioneers. “By joining forces with Ottawa University, we are not only expanding our reach but also investing in the next generation of gaming.”
At the center of the partnership is access — giving Ottawa students the opportunity to work alongside a professional esports organization while gaining exposure to the industry beyond competition.
For Ottawa Braves Esports, that connection is designed to extend learning beyond the classroom and into real-world experience.
“We are thrilled to partner with the Kansas City Pioneers,” said Kenny Nguyen, interim director of esports for Ottawa Braves Esports. “This collaboration provides our students with an opportunity to learn from and work alongside a professional esports org.”
The effort also aims to establish a more defined pathway into professional esports — a step Nguyen said is critical for students pursuing careers in the rapidly growing industry.
“It will enhance their educational experience and provide a clearer pathway for them to pursue their passion for esports at a professional level,” he said.
Founded in 2019, the Kansas City Pioneers compete across multiple esports titles and have positioned themselves as a growing presence in the region’s competitive gaming scene, with a focus on expanding the Midwest community.
Ottawa Braves Esports, based at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kansas, serves as the school’s official collegiate esports program, combining competition with an educational framework designed to prepare students for careers in the industry.
Together, the organizations are aligning around a shared goal: building infrastructure, visibility and opportunity for esports in the Midwest — one player at a time, Kulikov said.
